What is a Raspberry Pi ? Working and Applications of Raspberry Pi

In this post, we are going to discuss Raspberry Pi, Working and it’s applications. In short Raspberry Pi can be known as a single board computer.

At first glance, Raspberry Pi doesn’t seem very impressive, especially when you get to the specifications. Normally it contains

  • 1-4 GB of RAM.
  • Micro HDMI Ports.
  • 2 USB Ports

You can use Raspberry Pi as a general-purpose PC for web surfing, or YouTube. But this is not it was meant for. Let’s discuss more Pi, It’s working and applications

Let’s see at the headlines.

HEADLINES

  • Whole New Computer For Just $35.
  • Credit Card Size Device.
  • Small Computer Running Linux.

Raspberry Pi, the name was originated from Raspberry (the fruit) and Pi (from Python Programming Language).

It uses the Linux Operating System that serves as Pi’s operating system called Raspbian. So what really makes this device interesting is not just mounting small parts to the motherboard like a camera or display.

The 40 pins general purpose input/output or GPIO is used to connect the Raspberry Pi to everything whether it is a monitor or weather station or any Robot.

  • This Functionality was originally built in so that it could be used to teach Computer Science and Programming to relatively young students.

Let’s Discuss

1. History

A few years ago, Broadcom ( a company that manufactures chipset for smartphones) comes in partnership with the University Of Cambridge and co-founded Raspberry Pi Foundation.

Therefore, it was originally developed to teach young students programming or computer science and to make the cheap functional computer available for third world countries. After that, Pi got popular when Geeks like you start doing small projects.

2. Small Computer Running Linux

It is a credit card size computer which is not popular for its size or price but has some interesting working as well. You can buy Pi from this link and can use it as your full functional computer.

  • On the first day of sale, 100k RPI units were sold.

3. Several Versions Of Raspberry Pi

Over the year, different versions of RPI have released

Raspberry Pi 1 2012-14
Pi 2 2015
Pi Zero 2015-17
Pi 3 2016-18
Pi 4 2019

4. Other Competitors Of Raspberry Pi

There are several competitors available in the market but everyone has its own strength and features. Some of them are below:

  • Banana Pi
  • Orange Pi
  • Beaglebones

5. You Need to Spend More than $35

After buying, Raspberry Pi in just $35. Definitely, you’ll need to buy a separate monitor, keyboard, etc to make it work. So you may have to spend some extra money to make the magic happen.

6. How Does It Work?

Well, it contains a built-in RAM and a CPU in a Broadcom chipset. Even, a single chip on the board is controlling USB and Ethernet interface which can cause disaster if you use your computer heavily.

7. Is It A Desktop Replacement?

Even though it runs on a Linux platform you’ll experience a nice looking GUI with a web browser and some inbuilt games. As far as I know, you can’t use it as a desktop replacement.

For instance, the web browser is nice but opening more than 1 or 2 tabs will make it freeze and you’ll have a bad experience. Even, you can’t run any big programs such as Photoshop.

FYI, it was not meant for any regular desktop user but it has a lot to do with robotics and IOT’s.

8. Usage

It can be used in many different ways but below are some examples in which Raspberry can fit easily:

  1. Learning For Kids.
  2. Cheapest source for learning Linux.
  3. Use your Raspberry Pi as a Network Storage Device.
  4. Use this as your TORRENT machine.
  5. XMBC Media Server [ with KODI ]

What’s New In Raspberry Pi 4?

So, let’s talk about some major differences between Raspberry Pi 4 and previous version Raspberry Pi 3.

Raspberry Pi 3 was launched back in 2018 with Quad Core Cortex-A53 processor and 1 GB of RAM but later replaced by Pi 4 with different options of RAM including 1GB,2GB, and 4GB. Below is the table detailing major differences.
